Cupolas

The cupola serves dual purpose, one is to provide lighting in the space below it and the other it also served as a look out point. A cupola also serves as a ventilation unit. A cupola resembles an inverted tea cup that has been placed in the roof. Some of the old buildings in Europe have cupolas on their roofs and they add an architectural symmetry to the roof. So getting a cupola on the roof could be quite practical if one wants to bring into use an upper floor room typically like the attic. Building a cupola will not only give light and ventilation to the room below it but will also break the monotony of the roof. A cupola on a flat roof will go unnoticed whereas one on an angled roof can be easily seen from a distance. The most famous cupolas that are on some of the buildings in Rome, Italy are copper cupolas. Today one cannot think of getting a copper cupola.

Most cupolas are not just bare structures but have some workmanship in them wish one can look at and admire one can get wrought iron or carved wood and use it in the design of the cupola to give it a pleasing look. After all one wants not only the cupola to be practical but also to be a real neat piece of workmanship that one can gaze at and admire.
