Greenhouses

Any hobbyist gardener or farmer living in the colder regions used to worry about the winters. The winter time was when the farmer or the gardener could do nothing but wait out the season before they could start their planting and get back to their favorite hobby that was gardening. The idea of building a place that could use the natural heat of the sun to maintain the plants an enclosed space started somewhere in the early 18th century and the concept of greenhouses were born. Very soon most gardening hobbyists and farmers took to building greenhouse which would let them keep growing their precious plants and they did not have to wait out the winter months.

Greenhouses are basically a room that allows maximum sunlight to penetrate inside and has a glass roof and windows. The windows and doors are kept shut and properly sealed so that the trapped air inside the greenhouse does not escape. This allows the gardener to keep his or her precious plants especially if they have tropical or sub-tropical plants in an environment where they continue to receive the required sunlight and heat that is so important for their survival. Gardeners also start their seedlings here so that they can be transplanted in the garden as soon as spring starts. Greenhouse designs differ depending on the area where they are built but one thing that they have in common is that they face south so that they can capture the maximum sunlight during the day. The incline of the roof also differs depending on the amount of snowfall that the area receives. The more the snowfall the greater is the incline of the roof so that the snow does not accumulate on the roof.

Today greenhouse design and structures have improved tremendously with the introduction of unbreakable glass better building and insulation material. Today greenhouse construction is not that difficult and there are several greenhouse kits that one can choose from and order and assemble. One can also get free greenhouse plans thanks to the Internet. Once they have decided on these they can pick up a plan from the Internet or if they are the do it yourself type make their own plan. The choice of material for the construction of the greenhouse would depend on what is most suitable for the area where the greenhouse is being constructed. One can construct a wood and glass greenhouse or a vinyl greenhouse or a metal framed greenhouse. Their can be a motorized or manually operated ventilation and heating system in the greenhouse to cater for those days when the greenhouse starts to get to hot and for when the sun does not appear for a number of days. It all depends on how simple or Hi-Tec does one want the greenhouse to be.

Greenhouse supplies like standby heating systems or ventilation systems are easily available and garden suppliers in the colder regions where greenhouses are popular stock such supplies or can source them from the manufacturers. One can get greenhouse kits and one can also build a portable greenhouse. How to build a greenhouse is not very time consuming or difficult. One should select the area where the greenhouse is to be constructed and lay the floor of the greenhouse which could be concreted. Then one would require building the frame of the greenhouse which could be of wood or metal or vinyl. What one needs to remember is that it is going to have a lot of glass in it so the side frames should be able to take the weight of the windows and the pillars will have to take the weight of the roof frame and the roof. The windows can be hinged so that all or some of them can be opened. The roof will also have glass panes and again one may require opening some of them to let the excess hot air escape. One can order a kit and follow the instructions of assembling the kit or get a building firm to construct the greenhouse for them.
